Inspection of sheet metal components - IMTMA/MF012

Programme Background

Stamping and bending allows sheet metal to be produced according to any desired freeform shape. The shape of the mating surfaces is important to obtain a good fit between assembled parts. To ensure that geometry specifications are actually met, freeform surfaces can be verified using many inspection methods depending on the complexity of the feature, the tolerance expectation and the class of the component. Also critical is the positioning and dimensioning of geometric features, such as holes and slots in automotive sheet metal components. Most features either serve as reference locations for part positioning or as attachment points for trim components.

Focus Areas
  • Importance of understanding the sheet metal drawing.
  • Importance of Demerit rating / PIST analysis
  • Process of manufacturing  sheet metal parts and common observations at each stage
  • Importance of material selection as specified.
  • Inspection Methods:
    • Inspection carried out at the time of Die Proving.
    • Inspection carried out in the production line-in stage inspection as well as final part checking.
  • Interpretation of dimensional report
  • Inspection using Laser Technology.
  • Inspection using White Light Scanning Technology*
  • Importance of inspection fixture in a carline set up especially for critical formed parts.
  • Importance of CMM holding stand for inspection on CMM.
