The Structure of the Machine plays an important role as it forms the basic foundation and it has to rigid enough to take various types of load under unfavorable conditions. The structure of the machine has a decisive influence on the three main parameters that define the capabilities of a machine, viz. motion accuracy, productivity of the machine and the quality of machining. Though Cast Iron and Steel are the most common materials for structures, new materials like Polymer concrete, Granite and Hybrid materials are finding increasing applications. Traditional designed machine structures were heavy and the design cycle is long. Today FEA/FEM tools are being used to perform analysis of machine structure parts leading to material & cost savings, optimization of the structural performance as well as shortened design cycle time.
