Programme Background
In the automotive industry higher acceleration, lower fuel consumption, higher passenger safety is demanded by every customer. The need to use high strength but lighter components remains a primary driver. Hydroforming is considered as one of the prominent and niche technologies to deliver lightweight components. Comparing to conventional manufacturing via stamping and welding, or forging & machining, hydroforming offers several advantages, such as decrease in workpieces cost, tool cost and product weight, improvement of structural stability and increase of the strength and stiffness of the formed parts, more uniform thickness distribution, fewer secondary operations, etc. Thus, hydroforming opens up new possibilities in manufacturing a variety of parts for different applications, otherwise considered difficult or sometimes even impossible.
